Interest in Scottish Terriers went up by more 553 percent following the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony at Celtic Park last week.

Lovely nature

Each of the teams were led out by a ‘Scottie’, which sparked a new interest in the native breed. Online searches for puppies rose from 93 on 22July, to 607 on 23 July – the day of the opening event.

“Despite its charm and lovely nature, the Scottish Terrier is one of the lesserknown breeds of pedigree dog, with only 339 puppies being registered with the Kennel Club in the first half of 2014,” said Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club secretary.

In decline

As with many native British breeds the Scottish Terrier had seen a decline in popularity over the past ten years, with more people buying ‘handbag’ dogs.

“We are glad that the interest in the breed has been so tremendous, both on social media and the Find a Puppy service and we hope that they continue to keep the nation’s attention,” Caroline added.
