What do you get if you cross Wet Wet Wet with women-only racing? The Ultimate Ladies Night, according to Carlisle Racecourse in Cumbria.

Female-only races

All seven races on the card on Monday 4 August are for female-only professional, amateur and apprentice jockeys. This will be followed with a concert by the nineties pop band.

The Ultimate Ladies Night, which began in 2011, is the only event of its kind in the world. Jockey’s taking part this year include Britain’s leading lady jockey Hayley Turner, apprentice Jenny Powell who is daughter of a Grand National winner, the 2013 Amateur Ladies Flat Champion Catherine Walton, and Shelley Birkett who recently won her first listed race at Newmarket.

Brightest talent

“We are looking forward to welcoming some of the world’s leading lady riders, as well as racegoers to Carlisle,” said Geraldine McKay, general manager of Carlisle Racecourse.

“Since it was founded we have seen an army of Britain’s brightest talent compete at this fixture and this year is no exception, there are some fantastic young lady riders within the sport and racegoers can watch them in action here. It’s set to be a cracking evening”.

The event is also hosting the 18th leg of the Longines World Fegentri Championship for Lady riders. The series features leading international amateur jockeys from seven nations and culminates with the finale in Mauritius in December. Alice Mills currently lies in third place following a win at the Curragh.

Win a car

The evening also includes competitions for the best dressed lady and gent as well as a range of fund-raising activities in aid of Cash for Kids – one of which could see you win a Mercedes-Benz worth more than £37,000.

Tickets for the racing and concert start at £25. For more information and to book, visit: www.carlisle-races.co.uk.
